Electroplating means doing the coating on metals or any
other conductive surface by electrochemical process .
We do the electroplating for mainly following reasons :

1. Protection
from rust
Globally
every years we loosing the a lots of metals mostly mild steel, which
cost us more than millions crores rupees . To avoid this we do the metal coating
on the steel so we can enhance the life
of steel . To protect the steel we mostly do the zinc or zinc alloy coating . Apart
from this we do nickel, cadmium, copper, chrome, lead,tin etc depends on the
others requirement along with protection of the metals. Zinc electroplating is most cheapest and popular method to protect
the metals. By just zinc coating we can’t get more protection life. To enhance
the protection life we do the chromating on the zinc coated surface. Chromating
can be vary depends on the protection life and coating colour. It all depends
on the requirement of parts and as well as cost factor.
2. Decorative
purpose
Aparts from the protection
of metals , we do the electroplating for decorative purpose . For decorative
purpose nickel + chrome coating is the most popular . This coating is applied
on automobile parts, furniture parts, bathroom fittings parts etc. Other than nickel / chrome gold , silver , bronze , copper with antique finishes are also most
popular but this are costly.
3. Soldering and
conductivity purpose
Aparts from the protection
of metals , we do the coating for soldering conductivity purpose. For soldering purpose
tin coating is most popular and suitable for electronics parts . For conductivity
purpose silver, copper and tin coating is most popular and suitable for contacts and
electronics parts .
4. Functional
purpose

of metals , we do the coating for functional purpose like hardness, engineering or
mechanical applications etc. For this purpose we do the hard chrome plating ,
electroless nickel coating, copper coating etc.
